Pictures from uOttawa OBJ Article

Last month I was commissioned to shoot a portrait of Joseph Wabegijig, coordinator of the Faculty of Engineering’s Centre for Indigenous Community Infrastructure (CICI) at uOttawa.
Picture
We needed a picture of Joseph with a relevant point of interest for the background. The CICI building has The Reconciliation Canoe, which was a good choice and ended up being the picture selected for the piece.

As always, I tried a few other options to give the client a choice. The un-cropped main image and a few of the other shots from the shoot are below.

Ottawa Fury vs Saint Louis FC

8/28/2019

At the weekend I went to shoot the Fury against Saint Louis. I'd never shot a football game on an artificial surface before, so it was interesting to see how it went. The ball moves a bit quicker and bounces a bit higher than on grass but there wasn't too much difference.
Picture
The main sub-text to the game was Fury captain Carl Haworth playing his 150th game for the club, he was honoured before kick-off (below).
Picture
The Fury played fairly well having the better of the first half with Carl Haworth completing an ideal day for him by getting the opening goal (following two images) from a free kick with Hadji Barry scoring the second. Saint Louis got a goal back in the second half but couldn't find an equaliser.

Ottawa 67's vs Oshawa Generals

I've not covered a hockey game yet, so I thought it'd be a good time to start with the 67's who are top of the the standings in the OHL and I was lucky that the 67's were happy to let me in to cover the game!
Picture
Watching the game from the boards gives you a real sense of how quick and physical the game is even at junior level. I'm used to shooting soccer but hockey is even quicker, it took a while to get used to the speed and tactics and I have plenty to learn and more experience to gain.
Picture
Luckily the game against Oshawa provide plenty of action and goals, with two fights thrown in for good measure!

Lung Association #breakstigma Campaign

10/2/2018

This week saw the launch of the Canadian Lung Association #breakstigma campaign, I was lucky enough to be able to shoot some portraits of patients who were involved in the project.
Picture
The campaign aim is to decrease the stigma around lung disease. According to a recent survey of 1500 Canadians, stigma plays a significant part in the physical and mental well-being of Canadians with lung disease. It's a great cause and one I was glad to be able to contribute to.
Picture
We shot the project on a cold winters day in downtown Ottawa. The patients we worked with were a great group, they didn't get down heartened despite the temperature and were always ready to jump in front of the camera and get the right shot. The aim was to show them in their typical environment and how they've have had a positive outcome!

Everything has come together nicely and you can see it all here https://www.lung.ca/stigma Have a look and please help out if you can!

Doug Ford was in the village of Manotick this weekend as he campaigned as leader of the PC Party ahead of the 2018 Ontario Election.
Picture
Ford goes into the the final few days of the election with a small lead in the polls ahead of Andrea Horwath's NDP Party, with the Liberals as distant third, as the parties battle to govern the province.

Downtown Phoenix Pay Protest

I went to shoot some pics at a protest in downtown Ottawa. It was Civil Service Union protest against the Phoenix Pay System which runs the payments for government workers.
Picture
The system has been causing problems for some time with some workers being under or even overpaid. Even overpayments are causing problems with peoples taxes, they also have to pay the money back.
Picture
The federal government announced it was looking to replacing the system in the near future. This doesn't solve the workers problems in the short term, hence the protest. Hopefully there will be a solution soon!

NDP Convention 2018

I had the chance to shoot at this years NDP Convention here in Ottawa. It was my first Canadian convention so it was fascinating to take a step back when I wasn't shooting and watch things unfold. The big set piece of the event was party leader Jagmeet Singh taking to the stage to give his speech on the Saturday afternoon.
Picture
It was Jagmeet's first convention as leader, so a great opportunity to see him in action and get some shots of him! He's a confident and charismatic speaker and there were plenty of great shooting options. Enjoy!

Dragon Boats on ice

I dropped in on the Ice Dragon Boat Festival at Dow's lake this weekend, as part of my bid to experience Winterlude.
Picture
There was plenty of effort on display and it was good to see people enjoying it. Supposedly this is the worlds biggest competition.
Picture
The competitors all use spiked sticks to grip on the ice and it's surprising how fast some of them can go!
